Geraldton, Western Australia
We put remoteroads and coastlinesback together.
Earthworks, haulage and civil for shires, mines and farms across the Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne. Family owned, out of Geraldton, since 2009.
Why THEM
Four letters,four things we do.
The name is an acronym. Transport, haulage, earthworks and mechanical, all under one roof, which is why a single contractor can open the gravel pit, cart from it, build the road and keep the fleet running four hundred kilometres from a workshop.
- Transport Getting plant and material to jobs that are a long way from anywhere.
- Haulage Moving material in volume, on haul roads THEM usually built themselves.
- Earthworks The bulk of it. Clearing, excavation, grading, sheeting, rock armouring, dams.
- Mechanical Their own maintenance, run by a director who started as a heavy duty diesel mechanic.
Useless Loop, Shark Bay
Closing the Seroja breaches at Useless Loop
- 01 A breach open to the ocean, seen from above.
- 02 A wall of red fill pushed out across the gap, loader and excavator working the face.
Cyclone Seroja opened the salt ponds at Useless Loop to the open ocean in 2021. The widest breach was over thirty metres. THEM closed them.

Who we are
One loader in 2009. Seventy people now.
Stephen and Katrina-Lee O’Brien started THEM Earthmoving in 2009 with a single Samsung loader, working out of a backyard. Stephen had come up as a heavy duty diesel mechanic; Katrina-Lee was teaching in schools across the Mid West and ran the books at night.
Both are lifelong Mid West locals. Their grandparents came to the region in the 1950s and both families have been here since. Three generations work in the business today, and it runs from a purpose built depot rather than the backyard it started in.
70 people on the tools, in the workshop and in the office
